Monument to the Discoveries

The Padrão dos Descobrimentos ("Monument to the Discoveries") in Lisbon was built in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. Prince Henry is regarded as the main instigator for Portugal's exploration by ships to India and the Orient during the 15th and 16th centuries. He is shown holding the model of a ship, in harmony with modern sailboats on the Tagus River.
