I watched with amazement as this great white egret flew and hovered over the main lake, and caught a large gizzard shad fish on morning of Aug. 14, 2022. This is an uncommon fishing technique for the egret; normally they stand near the edge of lake and strike at passing prey.
The recent rains might have led to temporary increased fish activities near lake surface, making them easier targets to be picked off by the flying birds. Interesting also to note the wingspan of an adult great white egret is about 5 ft.
